Cocos and Date Palm trees are popular ornamental trees in Western Australia, particularly in regions with a warm and tropical climate. Proper maintenance is essential to ensure these trees remain healthy and visually appealing. Here are some guidelines for their care and maintenance in Australia:
Cocos Maintenance:
Watering: Cocos palms require regular watering, especially during dry periods. However, they do not tolerate waterlogged soil, so it’s important to ensure proper drainage. Water deeply but less frequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between watering sessions.
Fertilisation: Palms require specific palm fertilisers that contain micronutrients. Regular feeding, especially during the growing season (spring and summer), can enhance their overall health.
Pruning: Remove dead or damaged fronds (leaves) periodically. Avoid cutting green fronds unless they are blocking paths or structures, as these fronds contribute to the palm’s growth and energy production.
Pest and Disease Management: Keep an eye out for common pests such as spider mites and scale insects. Regular inspection can help detect problems early. Fungus can also affect palms; ensure good air circulation around the tree to prevent fungal issues.
Mulching: Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the palm helps retain soil moisture, regulates temperature, and provides essential nutrients as it breaks down.
Date Palm Maintenance:
Watering: Date Palms require deep and infrequent watering. Newly planted palms need regular watering to establish their root systems. Once established, water deeply but less frequently. Palms are drought-tolerant, but consistent watering is essential for optimal growth.
Fertilisation: Date Palms benefit from regular feeding with a balanced palm fertiliser. Apply the fertiliser around the base of the tree, following the recommended dosage. Over-fertilisation can lead to nutrient imbalances.
Pruning: Remove dead or dying fronds as needed. Be cautious when pruning, as excessive removal of green fronds can stress the tree and impact its health.
Pest and Disease Management: Date Palms can be susceptible to pests like scale insects and diseases such as Fusarium wilt. Regular inspection and early intervention with appropriate treatments are essential.
Mulching: Mulch around the base of the palm to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and discourage weed growth.
Support: Young Date Palms might need support to help them grow straight. Use stakes if necessary, but ensure they are not causing damage to the roots.
Always consider the specific environmental conditions and the age of the trees when planning maintenance activities. Consulting with Jungle Busters Tree Services can provide tailored advice based on the specific location and requirements of the Cocos and Date Palms in WA.

Preparing the green waste
- All bulk green waste must be placed loose on the verge (no boxes, bags or containers).
- Bulk green waste is shredded and mulched, therefore, it cannot be contaminated with any other waste. All non-green waste items will be considered as littering.
- Do not place bulk green waste on artificial turf, stencilled paving or near water meters or power domes.
- For small amounts of green waste or loose leaves, place into your lime green lid garden organics bin.

Green waste verge collection tips
To ensure green waste is collected from your verge, please make sure:
- Branches are no longer than 1.5 metres
- Thick branches (25cm diameter and above) are cut into 30cm lengths
- Loose and small green waste (weeds and leaves) should be placed in your green waste (lime green lid) bin for collection fortnightly. Properties over 450 Sq metres should already have a green waste bin. Alternatively they can be placed in your red lid general waste bin.
- Green waste is not in hessian, polypropylene or plastic bags
- Green waste is free from contamination.
Do not place green waste on or near:
- Footpaths, driveways, overhanging onto the roadway or obstructing views from driveways
- Artificial turf, trees/stumps or sprinklers
- Water meters, Telstra covers, SECWA power covers, manhole covers or posts
- Fences, walls, letterboxes and fixed objects.
Pre-booked bulk junk and greens collections
In mid-2024, the City will move to a new, pre-booked collection service for both bulk junk and bulk green waste. Residents will be able to choose a time for their bulk waste collection by booking online or calling the City.
